COVID-19 Update | August 1, 2020
To our Art School Community,
For over 90 years, the Honolulu Museum of Art’s commitment to education has been at the core of our mission, and will remain an important part of our kuleana to this community for generations to come.
Like other arts and culture institutions around the world today, we are faced with a very serious and sobering obstacle with the COVID-19 pandemic. Delivering our traditional programs, particularly studio classes, is challenging in the current climate as the very nature of hands-on learning requires close interaction throughout the teaching process as well as physical contact with a multitude of surfaces, equipment, and tools. To ensure the health and well-being of our staff and community, it is necessary to place HoMA’s traditional studio programs at the Art School on hold for the coming months. In the meantime, HoMA will be introducing a new model of education and audience engagement in the museum that allows for digital and distance learning until it becomes safe to once again meet, learn and create together in the Art School.
Over the coming months, HoMA will also be investing heavily in the infrastructure needed to elevate our art education programs. We are happy to announce that the State of Hawaiʻi has given final approval for “Grant In Aid” funding to HoMA so that we may increase capacity and upgrade facilities at the Art School. The grant, which will be matched by a generous donor, will go to major repairs and renovations including upgrades in ventilation, plumbing, networking, classroom fixtures, and a brand-new kiln house. The goal of this project is to bring the Art School and its programming up to a higher level of excellence that we and all those who participate in its programs can truly be proud of. We anticipate work on this project to begin soon, with a target completion date of January 2022.
Thank you for understanding the complex decisions and moves we have made in these uncertain times, and please be assured that the museum remains committed to our art education programs.
We appreciate your continued support, and look forward to seeing you soon!

All of our Young Artist classes are rooted in the arts education philosophy of Teaching for Artistic Behaviors. Classes are student-centered and choice-based using a structure that introduces inspiration, demonstrations and reflection and are supplemented by visits to the Museum.
